News from the Music Corner (Sunday 3/7/10 Bulletin)
Today is the Third Sunday of Lent. How is your Lent going? Are you accomplishing what you set out to do on Ash Wednesday? Musically as a parish, I would say yes! As you have heard over the last couple of weeks, our Lenten music sounds completely different, and it should. Music is such a big part of our worship that we should always know what liturgical season the Church is in by its sound

Our simple bell chime at the beginning and at the end of Mass reminds us of the sacrifices through Lent. It gives us some time to center on Jesus and all that he sacrificed for us.

Our sung Mass parts are done acapella--without instrumental accompaniment. Again, this is another use of sacrifice.

As we take up our Rice Bowl collection after Communion, you have heard these words:

Take O Take Me As I am
Summon out what I shall be
Set your seal upon my heart
and live in me.
-John Bell

This comes from a musical setting that is used often for Taize Services. These beautiful words speak to us as a reminder that Jesus is always with us and that we are asking for his guidance. A beautiful song for reflection for the use after Communion!

A special thank you goes out to Sister Chris and to Julia for keeping the ship running this weekend in my absence. As you are reading this, I am in St. Louis facilitating at a Confirmation Retreat at Seven Holy Founders Parish for their seventh graders. Please keep them and all those who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this year in your prayers, especially our parishioners here at SCL.

Keep us the good singing during this season of Lent.
Peace,
Vince Zaprzal
