Religious Education
St. Catherine Labouré Parish provides a structured program for the religious education of elementary school children attending local public schools following the standards recommended and/or required by the Archdiocese of Chicago. The curriculum includes all dimensions of religious education: doctrine, scripture, liturgy, prayer, service, and sacramental preparation. The curriculum is taught in the spirit of cooperative learning and hands-on activities that connect religion to everyday experiences. Classes are available on Sundays for Kindergarten through 8th graders. Additional liturgical experiences and activities are offered throughout the school year. Parental involvement is an important aspect to the development of the program. A volunteer form is given to every family to experience spiritual growth. New catechists are always welcome to join our program.

Basic Prayers and Baseline Standards
Each year, we work with each grade level to learn prayers and belief statements from our Catholic tradition. We also want to cultivate an atmosphere of prayer, so that students can grow to desire that time with the Lord and be able to pray independently. This handbook will help families at home to know which prayers, ways of praying, and basic baseline knowledge of the faith are expected at every grade level. Parents and catechist handbook is here.
Responsibilities of Parents in Religious Education
Part Three of “The Catechism of the Catholic Church” (Life in Christ), Nos. 2223 and 2226, can enlighten us regarding responsibilities as parents. I invite you to read these two sections, reflect upon them, and ask God to help parents to be active catechists in their homes, the “domestic church”.

They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues. This requires an apprenticeship in self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery-the preconditions of all true freedom. Parents should teach their children to subordinate the ‘material and instinctual dimensions to interior and spiritual ones.’ Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children. By knowing how to acknowledge their own failings to their children, parents will be better able to guide and correct them.” (CCC 2223)
“Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child’s earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents.” (CCC 2226)

Stay and learn more about your faith while you drink coffee with us while children attend Sunday R.E. classes. Open to all adults who want to grow in their faith.
